Be Prepared to Eat Cake
A group exhibition reflective of the themes and
highlights of the gallery’s past two decades.
Opening Reception: Sunday, November 22 1-4 p.m.
To mark the George Marshall Store Gallery’s 20th anniversary this group exhibition features the variety of art that has been included in one of the previous 195 themed, group or solo shows. It would be impossible to include work by all 456 artists who have exhibited in the past. Only several dozen are included here, filling both the main and lower levels of the gallery. A slideshow in the gallery attempts to pay tribute to all past exhibiting artists by scrolling through images of individual’s work, installations and invitations.
The George Marshall Store is a very special mid-nineteenth century property owned and maintained by the Museums of Old York. Not a day goes by that a visitor doesn’t comment on the charm of this building and views looking out over the John Hancock Wharf. I sometimes wonder if storekeeper George Marshall would approve of the “contemporary” art on exhibit. Regardless of his artistic appreciation I think he would be pleased to know that his store has a 21st century vitality and is frequented and enjoyed by many.
