Maya Kuvaja

Surrounded by lakes and the foothills of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I am inspired by the wildlife and landscape around me, particularly birds. I create collages of repurposed, discarded vintage paper ephemera— book pages, maps, newspapers—and combine them with detailed paintings of birds. Through the combination of abstract, contemporary collage with classic wildlife illustration, I explore themes of our relationship to the natural world, conservation, and my love of these fascinating animals.

Kuvaja was born in Boston in 1975 and raised in coastal Maine. She earned her degree from Maine College of Art, and currently lives and works in rural western Maine.
